American Leopard Hound

Also known as the American Leopard Cur, Leopard Cur, or simply the American Leopard, the American Leopard Hound is incredibly rare. They are a highly intelligent and affectionate breed that is both an impeccable scent hound and a wonderful family dog. They are known to do particularly well with children due to their gentle dispositions. While their exact lineage may be unclear, we do know that the American Leopard Hound is one of the oldest treeing hound breeds from the United States. They are believed to be the descendants of dogs that were brought to Mexico by Spanish conquistadors that later mixed with local Mexican breeds. They were later brought to the United States by early settlers and used to hunt all manner of game including bears and mountain lions. After gaining popularity in North Carolina, they began growing in numbers across southern states, reaching as far south as Texas.
