Miniature Wire-haired Dachshund
The original Standard Smooth-haired Dachshund (pronounced DAKS-hund) was developed in Germany during the 17th Century as badger hunting hounds. The Miniature Wire-haired variety came along a little bit later in response to an increase in the local rabbit population. Their short legs, elongated body and especially small stature made them ideal to hunt small, burrowing prey. Their wiry coats helped to protect them from the elements as well as rough undergrowth while hunting. It?s believed that their wiry coats were inherited from rough-coated Pointer and Terrier breeds. Tenacious pups and expert diggers, the Miniature Wire-haired Dachshund is a skilled hunter and a wonderful companion.
