Miniature Smooth-haired Dachshund

The original Standard Smooth-haired Dachshund (pronounced DAKS-hund) was developed in Germany during the 17th Century as badger hunting hounds. The Miniature Smooth-haired variety came along a little bit later in response to an increase in the local rabbit population. Their short legs, elongated body and especially small stature made them ideal to hunt small, burrowing prey. Their short, smooth coats helped keep their fur free from dirt and debris while hunting and made navigating narrow tunnels easier. Tenacious pups and expert diggers, the Miniature Smooth-haired Dachshund is a skilled hunter and a wonderful companion.
