Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small, multi-purpose farm dog originating in Germany. Although the standard schnauzer arose sometime during the 15th Century, the miniature variety wasn't recognized by the American Kennel Club until 1926. Initially tasked with herding livestock and protecting property, the Schnauzer's real talent was ratting. When their exceptional vermin hunting skills were discovered, breeders worked to create a smaller version that excelled at eradicating rats and other pests on the farm. It's believed that the Miniature Schnauzer is the result of crossing smaller standard schnauzers with the Poodle and Affenpinscher. Not only was this new, smaller Schnauzer an impeccable ratter, but they were also incredibly loyal and affectionate towards their families and made excellent companions and family dogs.
