English Toy Terrier

The English Toy Terrier is a small, feisty breed developed from the Olde English Black & Tan Terrier and various other rat terrier breeds in England during the 1800s. Originally used to eradicate vermin and hunt rats, the English Toy Terrier quickly climbed the social ladder and became the companion dog of choice for women of prominence in Victorian England. The English Toy Terrier was quickly recognized for its personable nature and potential as a companion breed rather than a fierce ratter. Distinguished gentlemen of the time often sported Manchester Terriers, however, these were considered more of a ?man?s dog? and so the English Toy Terrier and other small breeds were crossed to create the perfect dog for Ladies of the Court.
