Podenco Canario
The Podenco Canario is a medium-sized sighthound that hails from the Canary Islands of Spain. Commonly referred to as "Canary Hounds" or simply "Pods", these lean, agile dogs are avid hunters known to display unwavering loyalty to their families. Podencos are rather unique because it is nearly impossible to trace their ancestry and place of origin, however, it's believed that they are the descendants of ancient breeds brought from across the Mediterranean Sea. It's thought that Podencos were dispersed throughout the Mediterranean region as far back as the 8th century BC. Over time, individual varieties unique to specific islands and regions began to emerge, resulting in a wide range of pods with vastly different appearance standards. While Pods can vary greatly in size and coat texture, the majority are mid-sized with coats that are smooth or wiry. They are often mistaken for the Pharaoh and Ibizan Hounds.
