Swedish Lapphund

One of the oldest breeds native to the region, Swedish Lapphund originated in Lappland, Sweden, and were used by the Sami people to help guard and herd their reindeer. They can trace their ancestry back thousands of years to various Spitz breeds and are closely related to the Norwegian Elkhund and Norwegian Lundehund. Their thick double coats, well-muscled frame, and heavily insulated ears and paws allowed this hardy breed to work in the harshest, coldest conditions without fail. Their straight, medium-length coats can be found in black, sable, wolf sable, cream, and brown. A rare breed, there are only approximately 1,200 Lapphunds in existence today.
