Patterdale Terrier

The Patterdale Terrier, also referred to as the Cumberland, Westmoreland, and Fell Terrier, is a lively, compact, and feisty member of the terrier family that can trace its roots back to 18th Century England. It's believed the Patterdale's ancestry contains a combination of the Welsh Terrier and the Old English Black & Tan Terrier, which is now extinct. It's likely that today's standard of the breed also contains some Bedlington, Dandie Dinmont, and Border Terrier. These lively, courageous little dogs were initially tasked with hunting vermin and smaller predators such as foxes and badgers that may harm livestock. Their compact size allowed them to chase prey into tight spaces like burrows and dens while their bold nature meant they seldom backed down from a challenge, giving them the makings of a perfect ratter.
