Bavarian Mountain Hound

Originally bred in Germany in the 19th Century, the Bavarian Mountain Hound is a medium-sized hound with a lean, agile body and impeccable scent-tracking skills. In fact, their "cold nose" tracking abilities are so acute that they can differentiate between the scent of the injured prey they are tracking and other animals in the vicinity. Also known as the Bavarian Mountain Scent hound and Bayerischer Gebirgsschwei, this noble breed is the descendant of the German Bracken Hunting Dog and Hanoverian Scent hound, both of which were too large to hunt in the area's treacherous mountain terrain and dense brush. The resulting Bavarian Scent hound was lighter, more agile, and quicker on its feet but retained its ancestor's extraordinary scenting abilities.
