Canine Genetic Age Test

The DNA My Dog Canine Genetic Age Test is designed to determine the biological age of your dog. Genetic or biological age is different than chronological or actual age in that genetic age gives insight into the predicted longevity of your dog from a cellular level.

Telomere shortening is involved in all aspects of the aging process on a cellular level. Telomere length represents our genetic age as opposed to our chronological age.

This test was performed by measuring the length of your dog’s telomeres, the dynamic, protective caps on the ends of r DNA strands that tend to shorten with age. The test measures your dog’s Telomere length and this is processed through the Canine Genetic Age database of thousands upon thousands of dogs which match your dog’s Weight/Size Group as well as Breed. Your dog's telomere length is matched to determine your dog's actual genetic age. A sample of this analysis is shown below:

If chronological age is not known the line will fall at the very good level.

If chronological dog age is known:

If your dog’s genetic age falls before, at or just after your dog’s chronological age in the green or yellow parts of the diagram that is good news! This means your dog is aging at a cellular level that matches the actual chronological age of your dog.

If your dog’s genetic age falls after the bar with your dog’s chronological age this may indicate a health issue with your dog. PLEASE NOTE: This does not indicate your dog has a health issue. It means your dog’s genetic age exceeds its chronological age.

Excellent- Genetic age is better than chronological age.

Level 1

Very Good- Genetic age is in line with chronological age.

Level 2

Moderate- Genetic age is slightly more than chronological age.

Level 3

Severe- Your dog is showing a significant variance between their chronological age and their genetic age.

Level 4

There are many factors that may result in a higher than average genetic age in dogs. Dogs that have had a life of stress and medical issues may fall in this category. This may also be an indicator of undiagnosed illness in your dog including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. If your dog has not been checked for these and other health conditions a visit for a health screen at your veterinarian may be warranted. This is an excellent opportunity to make sure your dog is screened for any health issues and use appropriate interventions to slow down the activity of the telomeres and take care of any potential health issues as early as possible.

If chronological dog age is not known:

Congratulations: You just discovered the genetic age of your dog! While this does not take any potential health issues into effect that may be increasing your dog’s age it is currently the only scientific method available for determining dog age at a genetic level.
